Lucy at Arighi Bianchi agrees, ‘Sticking to a cohesive colour theme – think white and gold, red and green, or icy blue for example – will prevent your decor from looking too busy or messy.’

2. Go for reflective decor

3. Position your tree strategically

‘Tucking the tree into a corner is ideal for maximising floor space in the rest of the room and keeping the main space open. Another option is to place it in an unused space next to the sofa, so it seamlessly integrates into the room’s seating area. Christmas trees also look fabulous placed in bay windows, which often have unused space in front of them – not only does it look festive from inside, but also creates a welcoming scene from outside. If you do want a proper tree, it might be an idea to temporarily swap out a side chair or small table to make more room,’ Lucy at Arighi Bianchi says.
4. Decorate living room furniture

‘Living room furniture is ideal for festive decor. Use sideboards, console tables, or shelves to display small items like candles, figurines, or baubles. Drape garlands or fairy lights along the back of a sofa or chair to create a festive atmosphere without taking up floor space,’ Victoria at ScS says.
Lucy adds, ‘You can also decorate existing furniture with festive accents like ribbons on chair backs instead of bringing in additional items.’
5. Dress the windows

You may not be looking out onto a winter wonderland this Christmas (finger’s crossed for snow), but your windows are the perfect target for a sprinkling of festive cheer. A generous bay window or any windows with deep sills or seating will provide a little more space to layer up the holly, ivy and evergreen spruces but it’s easy to drape garlands and tinsel across even the smallest frames for a beautiful Christmas window decor look.
‘No matter what style of window you have, there are lots of great opportunities to utilise different types of decorations,’ enthuses Rikke Blaesild, range and design manager at JYSK. ‘Even simply hanging existing decorations such as baubles and other tree ornaments in front of the glass will add festive sparkle without needing to splurge on extra decs.’

8. Add festive sparkle to shelving

Get your shelfie action on and give vertical storage a seasonal glow up – be it a single shelf above the sofa, living room shelving in alcoves or a small dresser. If you don’t have any shelving in-situ, consider investing in freestanding shelves. ‘A slimline shelving unit provides the ideal framework to create a neat festive display while maximising the space in the room,’ says Jonathan Clark, creative director of Shelved.

10. Focus attention upwards
